The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, visited the University of Havana this Wednesday, where he held a meeting with professors and researchers involved in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation in the country.

During the exchange, professors from the faculties of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Social Communication participated, along with representatives from the Ministry of Higher Education and the communications sector. Several academic and technological projects promoted by the university in areas related to artificial intelligence and digital innovation were presented during the meeting.

According to the Cuban president, these visits are part of a series of tours he has been carrying out across various national institutions, especially those connected to digital transformation, technological innovation, and the application of artificial intelligence in strategic sectors.

During the meeting, it was emphasized that artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming multiple areas of modern society, and therefore Cuba must continue advancing in this field from the perspective of technological sovereignty and national development. The participants also highlighted the importance of strengthening the use of national data, promoting technological education from primary school to university level, and fostering greater scientific and digital awareness throughout society.

Topics related to cooperation between universities and enterprises were also discussed, as well as the need to accelerate the practical application of artificial intelligence and its potential in sectors such as healthcare, education, energy, industry, and transportation, with the aim of optimizing processes and contributing to the country’s economic and social development.

Although challenges still remain, Cuban universities continue to demonstrate their academic and scientific capabilities in the field of emerging technologies, consolidating their role as key actors in promoting innovation and national technological development.
